Property Release needed for modified image?

Recommended Posts

Suppose, just suppose.... you take a picture of the side of a building because of the pattern of its structure.  Then you modify the image, say give it an overall purple cast and distort it with some repeated distortion, just for example.  Submit as Abstract, or Backgrounds/Textures.

Is a property release still required (by Shutterstock...) ?

Thanks, community!

Hi Brian. They're lenient with backgrounds and textures, as far as property releases go ... as long as the final image isn't recognizable as that building. Same if submitting a vector, except with a vector you'd have to attach your original photo as a reference if it was obvious the image was created from a photo. :)

I think as far as artistic integrity goes...are you talking about an architectural design like molded curves or patterns such as stucco or bricks....

I think the other comment is right unless you realize it was a unique artistic pattern...kind of like taking a chord from a song...may not be overly obvious but the the original source is part of the appeal....eh...not fair to original owner
