Thoughts on the Nikkor 80-400mm lens

Recommended Posts

So my kit 55-300mm gave up the ghost after 7 years of good service and I need to replace it.

I was looking at the Nikkor 80-400mm because that gives me a good overall range plus an extra 100mm over my old lens. Price wise it is at the top end of my budget but it is doable.

I have read the reviews but would appreciate any thoughts or comments on this lens before taking the plunge.

My camera is the Nikkon D500 https://mobdro.bio/ https://kodi.bio/.

I also replaced the kit 55-300mm with this lens and I've owned it for a couple of years now, so a few comments.

For me, the main difference is that this lens is a lot bigger and a lot heavier than the 55-300mm kit. That takes some getting used to. Obviously, it's a better lens and you can get good shots using it handheld but I find a monopod or a tripod helps a lot. I've had no problems with sharpness provided I don't get any camera shake. Also, it's not the fastest lens and if you are using it full stretch then you will get f/5.6. Additionally, I have used it with a 1.4 extender with no problems. So that gets you up to 560mm.

Overall, once I got used to it, I was very happy with the results.

I took this with the lens:
