it is very similar with "normal" drawing process. First stage is idea and sketch. Second stage is drawing main contours. Third is preliminary stroke toning. And final is toning correction regarding contrast and lightning. I make my pictures with iPad and bluetooth stylus. The process is very similar to linocut.

I see nothing wrong with side light. Better to see shapes of the masks, textures. And also funny dramatic shadows.
